Review

Praise for Scott Snyder's Batman:

"A+. The hero's got personality (and is unafraid to release a quip as sharp as a Batarang), a horde of supervillains, gumption to spare and a whole host of high-tech gadgetry to suitably impress longtime fans and those new to the Dark Knight."—
USA Today

"[Writer Scott Snyder] pulls from the oldest aspects of the Batman myth, combines it with sinister-comic elements from the series' best period, and gives the whole thing terrific forward-spin by setting up an honest-to-gosh mystery for Batman to solve."—
Entertainment Weekly

Praise for Scott Snyder's American Vampire:

"At a time when vampire stories engulf pop culture, this one's actually fresh and original"—
Entertainment Weekly

"American Vampire is full of amazing dialogue and great characterization, simply an amazing book that begs to be picked up."—
Ain't It Cool News

Talon came as a complete surprise to me. I was none too thrilled with the New 52 as a concept and less than impressed with Scott Snyder's run on Batman. I didn't like his court of owls event, which makes how much I enjoy this series all the more shocking.

Talon follows Calvin Rose, a supremely gifted escape artist turned assassin for the shadowy underground Gotham organization the Court of Owls. Calvin was one of their greatest Talons, specialized court blacks ops, when he realized just how evil the organization he was working for truly was. He defected and, along with the reason for his change of heart, started a new life, far away from Gotham and the court. Unfortunately for Calvin, certain "events" in Gotham have once again put involved him with the Court.

This series does what, in my opinion, the court of owls arc in Batman failed to do, and that is make the court a credible threat. From the beginning it is clear that the Court is not to be trifled with, and Calvin's own history with them only serves to drive home this point.

What really grabbed me about this series is the pacing. There is a perfect blend of action, character development, and intrigue in each issue, making it so that NEED to see what happens next. Calvin is an extraordinarily realized character, especially considering he is brand spanking new, and the supporting cast is just as engaging. Batman, obviously, makes an appearance, but never at the expense of Calvin or any of the other characters. This is Calvin's story, and what a ride it is.

Talon is the complete package. Engaging main character, interesting supporting cast, an edge of your seat thrill ride of a story with intelligent twists around every corner, and a truly terrifying enemy that never lets up. If you liked
Batman Vol. 2: The City of Owls (The New 52)  than you will love this. If, like me, you didn't like Batman's run in with the owls, this is so well written, you'll STILL like it. A rollicking good time, and one of the best new series to come out of DC's New 52. A must buy.

If you are this is the book for you. It starts out with an origin story of Calvin Rose. The one talon that got away. Telling the story of how he became to be a talon and how he had to break from them. Then it tells a story full of action. Filled with Talons going at each other. I tend to spoil things when I try to explain things so I won't.

Usually spin offs are pretty lame. Batman over the years has been lame to good. The night of the owls was probably the best story line that I have read in comics in a long time, and I'm not even a big batman fan. The talon was a good story with great art.

After the Night of the Owls event, the Court of Owls was revealed to Batman and Gotham's finest. However, one such Talon didn't take well to the life he was supposed to lead and instead works to destroy the evil empire the Owls have built. Calvin Rose, ex-Talon, is on a mission to dismantle what's left of the Court of Owls and he'll stop at nothing to see it burn.

This TPB covers issues #0-7 of the Talon series. Being a spin-off, I really didn't expect much here but it takes you through some unexpected twists and turns and surprisingly doesn't have Batman in half the panels of every issue! Calvin's back-story is fleshed out in the zero issue which makes a great starter and then it jumps right into the main arc and just never quits. The Talon Felix Harmon was especially interesting as he was such a Bane-like powerhouse. Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV were the writers here and Guillem March did most of the art. At its best, though, this is merely a spin-off of a bigger Batman-related arc and doesn't seem like something that can deviate far from Batman and the Court of Owls so I see it getting stale fast. However, this first seven issues worked great. I don't quite think I'll be saying that about Volume 2 but you never know!

It's hard to truly get the broken feeling of Gotham outside of the dark knight but the talon has captured how Gotham isn't only the burden of Bruce Wayne

The rating isn't for the material. It is for the format. Kindle's picture quality sucks compared to Comixology or Nook and it doesn't allow for the pages to rotate into landscape view. Slowest graphic novel digital developer out there=AMAZON

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy For Anyone Who Loved Batman: The Court of the Owls
Reviewed in Canada on October 29, 2013
The DC NEW 52 is fantastic. I purchased Batman VOL 1 & 2 and loved the story of the court of owls. Talon picks up where Batman finished. Talon, a former member of the court of Owls, starts a war with the court and strikes directly at them. The story is well scripted and keeps the readers' attention. What I found really interesting with this book is that we learn about Talon's background and personal life while introducing new characters and using established characters from Batman to move the story along at a fast pace which results in a cliff-hanger. I am waiting for Talon Vol.2 impatiently.

Guillem March is easily on of my favorite artists. The fact that he draws 90% of this entire collection is reason enough for me to buy it.
