"Jack Campbell" is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer (and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis). As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels, as well as the Beyond the Frontier continuation of The Lost Fleet, and The Lost Stars series (a spin-off of The Lost Fleet). He has also written the Stark's War series and the Sinclair/"JAG in space" series, and has written many shorter stories featuring space opera, fantasy, time travel, and alternate history. Many of these stories can be found in the three Jack Campbell ebook anthologies. He lives with his wife (the Indomitable S) and three children (two of whom are autistic) in Maryland.

Great to see the two former enemies learn to trust each other and gradually earn each other’s respect. Decisions show logical progression in relationships and tie in nicely with the other Lost Fleet/Lost Stars series. I only wish each issue wasn’t so brief. Presumably they’ll all be combined eventually. Right now, it doesn’t feel complete. I do miss the detail Campbell is able to include in his prose stories. It would have been interesting to see more of the action when the labor camp was invaded. Artwork is terrific and makes me forgive the normal comic book format with perfect bodies and physiques for every character.

I've been a fan of this series from its beginning. This is a great story but it's much too big to fit into 5 issues. It should have been twice that: it's been condensed too much and the gaps are too obvious. I hope it's expanded to novel length in book form to do the story true justice. Art is very good but ships are TOO much in the 'shark/whale' image mentioned in the books. And everyone in a military involved in a multi-generational war isn't a super-fit, handsome thirty-something, as all the characters shown are. I'm still looking forward to the next five issue series hinted at in the remark 'The Corsair will return.' And give us that full length book--ebook if necessary.

I love the drawing style. Storyline is as good as the books'. Can't wait for the next issue and wish it was a monthly.

The series was short and left unfinished and left me wondering if they will write more or was this just a test of the market. Still enjoyed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many differences to the books

First of all - this is a graphic novel. It can in no way express the thoughts and emotions inside a character as well as a "text only" book can.

Now for the graphic novels as such: The characters are too young, too pretty, too fit, the ships are too clean, too smooth and shiny... the things that bugged me most are: Michael Geary, according to "The Lost Fleet - Dauntless", ought to be at least a decade or two older than John "Black Jack" Geary. I'd estimate John to be at least end thirties, Michael therefore ought to be late fourties to fifties; in the graphic novel, I would guess him to be no more than mid thirties. Secondly, what's with the scars? That criss-cross in the face is ridiculous in a Syndic CEO; they are usually extremely conscious about appearances and medicine has advanced enough to make scars a thing of the past. Thirdly, the ships do not show any indication of the "churned out too quickly to present a finished appearence" that is described in the books. Outwardly, there is no damage, no visible repair or patch-ups, just smooth, gleaming outer hull (and I agree with earlier reviews that the "whale/shark" design is absolutely over the top). Another thing: The CEOs presented look far too... snarly, for lack of a better term. According to the book, they ought to look smooth, falsely pleasant and non-committal. Hard to do in a graphic novel, I know, but the constant snarls and contorted faces look too ridiculously "evil"... like in an old silent movie.
I do hope that the story itself will be made into another novel spin-off, but I will not buy the next graphic novel - it was just too frustrating, especially since the brief glimpse of John Geary and Tanya Desjani is so contrary to what I'd pictured them as. I think I'll re-read the novels instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars This brilliant story deserves to be in book format and not under told with a limited graphic comic format.

I am a huge fan of the authors Black Jack universe and I look forward to every instalment with great anticipation. However, I chose to ignore this offering for a long time as I am not a fan of Graphic comics. Eventually my desire to learn what happened to Michael Geary proved to great and I gave in a bought the entire Corsair series on Kindle. That was a big mistake as much of the format is nearly unreadable on Kindle. Also, my dislike for the graphic comic format was strongly validated and I will never buy another.

I am not faulting the artist, who is excellent, and the story line concept is brilliant and where it ended points to great things to come and fills me with excited anticipation: as long as it doesn't arrive in the format of another graphic comic series.

I personally feel that the author delivered a big kick in the teeth to loyal fans like myself by telling this story only through graphic comic format. Had he written a parallel novel telling the same story then I would have no issues and I would be issuing 5 stars for it. Should the author decide to novelise this story then I will definitely buy the book despite already knowing the story. As I said, the story concept is brilliant and ends with a promise of so much more to come. It deserves a book that I can add to my bookshelves with pride.

Hopefully this is the authors last foray into graphic comics with the Black Jack story. Should he continue, then this is one fan he will be parting company with.
