The One Trick Rip-Off + Deep Cuts Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

Young lovers Tubby and Vim want to escape-- escape the mistakes they've made, the lives they've lived, and the dirty city weighing them down. Their plan is simple-- all they have to do is rip-off Tubby's pals, the One Tricks-- the toughest street gang in LA.

If they pull it off, they're set for life. If not, their lives won't matter much anyway.
What was going to be a smooth, straight-forward heist becomes a fast-paced battle to the death.

From Eisner Award-winning writer/artist PAUL POPE (Batman: Year 100, THB, Heavy Liquid, 100%) and presented for the first time in color by JAMIE GRANT (All-Star Superman). ONE TRICK RIP-OFF/DEEP-CUTS is 288 pages of raw power, of which over 150 pages are comprised of new, rare, and never before seen stories created during POPE's time traveling the world in the '90s.

Included in the "Deep Cuts" section is a bounty of unpublished and rare work POPE did in the '90s, including the legendary "Supertrouble" manga, created for Kodansha in Japan, appearing here in print for the first time.
It's a tour de force of pure, kinetic storytelling that will keep your eyes peeled until the very last page.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pope has long been admired for his unique global comics fusion, mixing the sensuous brushwork of European comics, the dynamic layouts and pacing of Japanese manga, and the punk ethos of American youth. This collection of early rarities shows the artist dabbling in styles and developing a distinct visual and narrative voice. The centerpiece, drenched in a Reservoir Dogs–like sense of unraveling calamity, follows two young lovers through a doomed attempt to ditch town with a cache of stolen cash. Also included are various pieces that are closer to poems than stories and some work Pope made while attempting to carve out a career during the burgeoning manga boom of the late 1990s. The hodgepodge whole presents a stylistically dazzling, substantively middleweight, and revealing look at Pope’s early work. The collection should slake, at least briefly, fans’ thirst for his upcoming Battling Boy, easily one of the most highly anticipated graphic novels of the year. --Ian Chipman

If you've never read Paul Pope's work this is the best starting point and introduction available. It's not one long graphic novel but several different full length stories over almost 300 pages. The strengths of it being essentially an anthology are there are several genres and story types covered yet they all are distinctly Pope. Same with the artwork, it's all Pope but the art is adjusted to fit each story. So you don't just get one version of Pope, but several. The new coloring is fantastic yet a few stories are one or two colors. Coloring with purpose, again to suit each story. The presentation is also the best of any of Pope's in-print works, hardcover with no annoying dust cover. Shiny and smooth, the name of the material escapes me. Sewn binding and decently thick, glossy pages that allow the inks and colors to simply pop. Overall, what more could you want in an anthology collection of Paul Pope? Anyways, if you want to read surely one of the coolest reads out there in 2013, get this now. Pope has several new books this year including Battling Boy. If you want to get caught up, get a primer of his work, or haven't tried Pope's work before now but don't want to commit to a full length graphic novel, this is for you. If you're a Pope fan, get this first chance you get. There is something here for fans of all types comics. European style comics, manga, sci-fi, crime, hell even film influences such as Tarintino. Phew. Did not expect to ramble on for so long but in case you couldn't tell, I loved this book.

In December when I saw this book was being released I literally S#@T a Kitten! I had only read The Tragic tale of Vim And Tubby once before when i was lucky enough to have a friend that was obsessed with Dark horse presents! And i have always wanted a nice collected edition of this story to put next to my copies of 100% and heavy liquid!
I must say the One trick rip-off looks stunning in full color and stands the test of time to prove it is still as amazing of a piece of glorious and tragic story telling as it was back in the early 90s! But that is not the kicker for me this Book also contains amazing epic Short stories told from mr. Pope's Point of view That give you an insight into his creativeness! And then Above all that there is One short in particular that is above the rest it is only a few pages long, but is the most beautiful story I have ever sen in graphic form! "Portrait of a girl with an unpronounceable name" Just moved me in a way i have not felt since I read brian Wood's Local!
I hope this book helps Launch other great rare works of Mr. pope in collected form such as THB and Escapo! BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE A FAN OF INDY COMICS, OR IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO INDY COMICS, OR IF YOU WANT A TRUE HUMAN STORY AND EXPERIENCE MIXED WITH SCI FI AND COMIC PULP!!!!
THANK YOU PAUL POPE!!! I can't wait to read battling boy!

Great art and coloring of one of the best comic book artists of our time, but the stories (specially the short ones) are very simple and poor.

Like all of Paul Pope's stories these have unusual and thoughtful storylines that pull you in and make you feel for the characters. All done in Pope's beautiful and unique drawing style.

This book looks great and has all of Paul Pope stories of "One Trick Rip-Off / Deep Cuts" in one big book.

The book came quickly...in mint condition, still in the shrink wrap from the publisher. And it was a great buy almost saved 50% off the cost of the book on top on all the other great buy. No shipping cost either.

I will use this seller again without hesitation...THEY ARE GREAT ! ! !

Thank you guys.

It's fast paced and exciting and the art is good but the characters seem to me to be holding back way too much for their personalities and character types. I see the potential and think "WOW" then see the actual path they took and don't believe it.

Paul Pope's work is a narrative and visual marvel. Drawing inspiration in equal part from Japanese and European comics but these nuances and elegant flair is built atop explosive and dynamic compositions that are pure Kirby and thus inherently All- American at the core.

The collection is the perfect primer for the uninitiated: containing both early and formative as well as more recent and assured work as well as the rare manga pages Pope did for a Japanese Publisher.

Anything by Paul Pope is always worth it! I'm NEVER disappointed by his work. He certainly has his own unique voice in comics with such a wonderful style of artwork. I'm a huge fan of his. This book represents a good length of time through Paul Pope's career so you can see the progression in his work. One thing is consistent through it all, that unique Paul Pope quality. Love this book.
