Ordway's Power of Shazam gets it's deluxe treatment
I am so glad DC finally got around to publishing this fine first collection of Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam. Been waiting for this awhile actually. The binding appears to be stitched and opens nicely. The printing is vibrant retaining it's original Glenn Whitmore coloring along with Ordway's, Krause and Manley's crisp, clear line work. What you get here is the original Power of Shazam graphic novel, the Power of Shazam 1-12 & "The Scarab Necklace" short story from Superman & Batman magazine #4 reprinted here for the first time and bonus material such as promotional poster art, notes for the original Power of Shazam graphic novel and a all new introduction written by Jerry Ordway. The stories here maintain a fine balance between light and dark. Read the secret origins of the Marvel Family, Black Adam & yes, even Mr. Tawny the talking tiger. Incredibly fun reading hard to put down. Thank you Mr. Ordway & Co. And thank you DC. Looking forward to volume 2 coming out next April.

To sum up this collection, re-establishes "Captain Marvel", before Marvel took over the name completely, as one of the forefront heroes of the DC Universe back in the 1990's. Considering the material was brought to the present with respect to the past, the stories themselves were very enjoyable and having the graphic novel from the same time incorporated into it was just the icing on the cake. The painted covers and artwork were beautifully rendered with so much respect to what came before in the 1940s and the 1970s. It is totally worth reading and collecting!

Writer/artist Jerry Ordway is, in my opinion, the only person at DCComics who has been able to update the classic Fawcett Comics hero, Captain Marvel (which he will always be to me, no matter how many characters Marvel Comics publish under the name). "Power of Shazam!" was the best modern version because it remained true to the original characters, while even retaining that sense of whimsy that made the Marvel Family stories so unique. Beautifully reproduced in hardbound format, this is the real deal for fans of Cap, Mary and Junior. Holy Moley!! I can hardly wait for volume two!!!

Such an amazing run by Jerry Ordway. Its criminal that DC cancelled Volume 2.

Edit: They have revived Volume 2 but now as paperback instead of Hardcover. If you have this volume, make sure to grab Volume 2 before it goes out of print and also help boost sales for a Volume 3.

This really averages out to a 4.5 star read. The original graphic novel that begins this collection is an out and out 5 star book. It has a good reintroduction story but it is the art that puts the rating over the top.
The twelve issue run that comprises the second part of this book is well drawn but not quite up to the standard set by the original graphic novel. The stories were fun, however and were wrapped up nicely. The one beef I have is with the character of the wizard. In Billy he is dealing with a child. If a "normal" parent or guardian were so cavalier in his treatment of a juvinal in their charge they would have faced criminal prosecution. For me this lack in the wizard was a detriment, a major flaw in the story l8ne and,so, warrantee the loss of a star.

I remember reading the Jerry Ordway Shazam back when it first came out. My brother collected them. So glad they’re collecting the run. Highly recommended. Way better than the revamped Shazam.

The real Captain Marvel. I've been waiting years to see this very underrated series collected. As unimpressed with what DC has done with SHAZAM the last few years, it's great to see this Jerry Ordway classic back in print.
