The Shadow has faced many foes over his decades-long career, but whoever dreamed up the idea of him tackling a group of evil illusionists was a genius. His "smoke and mirrors" terror tactics against regular criminals doesn't play the same when facing men who fool people for a living, so his regular methods don't always work. Throw in a magician assassin who uses playing cards like knives, and you have a thrilling story!

The artwork is good here, and while the violence can sometimes get a little strong it fits to the overall Shadow stories and character. I can't believe no pulp writer ever wrote a story like this where he faced an evil stage magician or two, since the Shadow pulps were written in large part by a magician and around the time of some great ones like Blackstone and Carter. It's a great concept and a great story.

Enjoyed the story and art. I'm not a long time Shadow fan so take that into consideration but a very enjoyable read.

The premise made for an excellent Shadow story. I enjoyed the blend of history and fiction. It was perfect until the last issue where it suddenly became rushed, goofy and then ended abruptly. I don't know what happened in the writer's/editor's room. They should've let the ending breathe a bit more, and possibly released another issue or two.
It was still enjoyable though. We need more Shadow stories, for sure.

Have you heard of the pulp 1930s era superhero name the Shadow? He’s one of the oldest superheroes from the pulp age whom the creator of Batman “borrowed” the concept of the Shadow (I am saying this as a fan of Batman). Older generations would hear about the adventures of the Shadow on Radio; that was way before my time. In this modern retelling of the Shadow you see that the character the Shadow fight crime and pursue a mystery with twists and turns. As someone who love the references to the 1930s in comics this satisfied my interests and the story was worthwhile! I am glad Dynamite Entertainment have printed this story about the Shadow on trade paperback collecting all the issues for this story arc and I hope they would have more stories of the Shadow in the future (I think I am almost done with all their recent stories of the Shadows that they published).
The story begins in 1936 in Los Angeles though there’s flashbacks of the Shadow’s memory of training he had with the famous Harry Houdini with tricks and feats. The book is about the Shadow goes after a group called The Society of United Magicians who would kill to learn the secret of the "Last Illusion" concerning how one can actually come back from the dead. They go after Harry Houdini’s wife base upon rumors that her late husband communicated to her and the Shadow protects her though he hypnotize her to find out what she knows and cloud her mind to not remember for the sake of her protection. As a result the league goes after the Shadow while the Shadow is also on the path to bring the league to face justice. This adventure involves facing illusions, traps and secret hidden rooms and doors and things not appearing to be what they are. Along the way the Shadow discovered that there is another society of illusionists that are on a war path with The Society of United Magicians who have an insidious agenda called the disciples of Nitocris. It comes to a dramatic conclusion in the final issue even with the evil forces having the upper hand.
The plot was well done in this work. It was a darker story line than what I’m use to; potential readers need to be aware of that. I appreciate there’s nothing crazy woke which seems to be in comics today.

The Shadow is, hands down, one of my favorite characters. But this story does something I thought was impossible... have something new to say with him. Pitting him against a murderous society of illusionists, it also serves as a subtle commentary on passing time. In the bereavement of Bess Houdini, the impoverishment of Aleister Crowley and the mono mono maniacal pursuit of a way to escape death, it's hard not to see a subtext dealing with the fears of old age and death. They even give HP Lovecraft a cameo to reinforce this. Worth a read, especially since it's on Kindle Unlimited.

My first introduction into "pulp" comic was with The Spider, I've read both Masks, and now this I see one major theme with old school heros... They actually do things. The joker would never survive in this type of world and I find that refreshing. Instead of doing the same nonsense over and over you get taken to new places every time. You never know what you're going to get. This one has extra banter than others but The shadow still doesn't waste much time. This last illusion concept managed to be rather haunting which was unexpected. Would make a cool movie shot old school detective style.

Empolgante (e também assustadora) história do Sombra, que mistura sua sempre sangrenta guerra contra o crime a uma pitada de horror Lovecraftiano! Nenhum fã do personagem deve perder!
