Written by the superstar tag-team of Matt Kindt and Jeff Lemire, The Valiant is both the perfect introduction into Valiant Comics for new readers, and also a gripping tale with significant impact that will satisfy longtime fans.

Fleshing out the mythology of the Valiant Universe further, we learn of the Eternal Warrior’s eons old conflict with a terrifying creature known as the Immortal Enemy. Gilad has been charged to protect the line of Geomancers, but three times in the past the Immortal Enemy has appeared and Gilad has failed in his duty. The Geomancer has been killed, and a dark age has descended upon the world.

Now, the Immortal Enemy has returned once more and is hunting Kay McHenry, the current Geomancer. But in this age of sentient battle armor wearing Visigoths, psiot powered teenagers, nanites laced super-soldiers, and rampaging uber-goats, perhaps this time the Eternal Warrior now has the forces necessary to stave off the Enemy’s evil intentions.

Focusing primarily on three characters (the Eternal Warrior, Geomancer, and Bloodshot) The Valiant quickly falls into two tales playing out side by side – Gilad, and his efforts to combat the Immortal Enemy by bringing in the other heroes of the Valiant Universe, while Bloodshot and Kay try their best to stay ahead of the beast’s grasp. It is with Bloodshot and Kay that we get the quietest moments of the book, as these scenes provide opportunities for character exploration between two very different types of heroes.

While the scenes with Kay and Bloodshot make up some of the best moments in the book, the scenes involving Gilad and the other heroes are where I must give The Valiant a slight ding. Things felt rushed in these scenes – the other heroes seem gathered remarkably easy and with no explanation, and the fighting is brief and confined to a handful of pages… one gets the feeling that much whittling must have been done to get everything compacted into a couple of issues. As a result, the Big Fight comes off as a weaker component of this otherwise great story.
Special mention must be made of the artwork by Paolo Rivera. It was considered no small coup that Valiant was able to secure his artistic services for this series, and the finished product shows that he was the perfect choice. The man shows terrific skill in scripting each individual panel, and the emotion he can convey through a characters facial expressions provides a master’s class for other artists out there.

In closing, The Valiant is a terrific piece of work from Valiant, and absolutely achieves the intended goal of providing a great jumping on point for new readers. Hopefully they are intrigued and seek out other Valiant titles to explore further. At the same time, with the new ‘Bloodshot, Reborn’ title and the recently announced Book of Death summer event all having their origins in The Valiant, enough future story material has been set up in these pages to make this tale an important one for all longtime fans to dive into. Not to be missed, as the future of the Valiant Universe begins to be revealed here!

This collection is a wonderful jump-on point for new Valiant readers, as it is a self-contained story filled with fantastic action, compelling characters, and a solid plot. Even better, the story continues if you choose to keep following it. The art is tasteful and beautiful. The dialogue is fast-paced and informative. The action is full-throttle and non-stop. The stakes are high, and lives are on the line, and as the tension ramps up, the plot thickens, and the heroes rise to the occasion. If you only own one Valiant-branded TPB, then The Valiant is the best one to start with! This book introduces you to a lot of the main Valiant characters, lets you spend some quality time with them, and then takes you for a ride. If this book doesn't make you a fan of Valiant's stellar characters and stories, then nothing will.

Hoo boy. The creative team on this book is fantastic. Now, this isn't a great place to jump into Valiant comics. It helps to know the characters going into it, particularly Bloodshot, Gilad the Eternal Warrior, and the Geomancer. These characters make up the heart of the story. Throughout time an entity known as the Immortal Enemy comes around to kill the Geomancer, who is a protector of the Earth. With a new Geomancer on the scene, the Immortal Enemy decides to strike in an attempt to send the world into another dark age.

I like the guises that the Immortal Enemy takes on throughout the book. We see some of its appearances in the past, which include some classic creatures. The most recent visage is something important to the Geomancer. I felt like this was a nice touch because it adds some tension for the character. The scenes between Bloodshot and the Geomancer are superb. This book also provides background on Gilad, including the origin of the three scars on his face.

The art is good. Clearly, the creators had a lot of fun putting things together. There are some big battle scenes featuring the various Valiant universe characters, and more intimate moments that dial things back. The events in this book have a major impact on the ones that follow, so its definitely worth picking up.

This is what a cosmic shift of AWESOME is all about. Many, many times comic company's tell you that something is going to change there universe forever with a story or an Event. Only to have it falter or be completely ignored later. Luckily Valiant isn't that way. They have proved it with "The Valiant". You can tell the first time you start reading it. Everything down to the art and writing is Perfect on details. You can see that the team spent countless time making sure everything would be right in the execution of each character. From Eternal Warrior to the true stars of the Series Bloodshot and Kay. Jeff Lemier and Matt Kindt have done the rare story that craves a reread. If you haven't read it than DO IT!
Paolo Rivera art is something to behold some call it simple buy dynamic and you can see the attention to detail is amazing to watch it unfold as the story does. There's a reason his original art is sought after and you can see it in this TPB. For $9.99 there is little doubt what an Amazing deal this book is at this price. This TPB from Valiant gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!

The Valiant mini-series collected in this TPB is an exciting, epic tale that spans across many ages of the Valiant Universe from writers Matt Kindt & Jeff Lemire, & features jaw-dropping, absolutely gorgeous artwork throughout from Paolo & Joe Rivera. It is a highly entertaining story that features many of the key Valiant heroes going up against The Immortal Enemy, a horrifying evil creature that re-appears throughout earths history to usher in a series of Dark Ages. This book does not require any previous Valiant backstory knowledge to enjoy, but it will suck you in & leave you wanting more. I loved it!

Another anthology book.

The first story is about the Eternal Warrior's past, how he is particularly bad at protecting Geomancers. Each time he loses, he usually gains another scar on his face, and the world gets another dark age. Now, the new Geomancer, Kay McHenry* is talking to Gilad's brother Armstrong about her concerns. Armstrong basically blows her off.

The book cuts to Bloodshot, infiltrating an island to recover a box for MI6, while Project Rising Spirit mercenaries are trying to stop him. He mows them down, and the book cuts back to Kay. She infiltrates a town where a disproportionate number of cancers are happening, turns out her former employer is extracting oil, but before she can do anything, a giant creature bursts through the ground. The Immortal Enemy, the creature that goes around killing the Geomancers.

Story cuts to Ninjak, who breaks into a hidden bunker. Turns out the box that Bloodshot has can't be opened conventionally. The bunker holds a man, who has the ability to break any codes. He also apparently doesn't age, as he recognizes Gilad, despite them not seeing each other since the Great War. Ninjak, the code Breaker, and Gilad hop aboard a jet, to get to Kay, who's under attack by the Immortal Enemy. Turns out the signal she was feeling from the Earth, was actually bait from the Immortal Enemy. Gilad attacks it, but Ninjak is paralyzed by a fear based hallucination. He is broken out of it by Gilad, Kay flees only to run into Bloodshot, who stalls IE a little, while Ninjak calls for more backup.

The Enigma Box, is somehow important to the exact day the comic is taking place. In universe, apparently there is a memo for the leader of MI6, to try and open it on this exact day. The memo had been left some twelve years earlier.

Okay, back to the action, apparently every super hero available showed up. Travel times basically don't exist in the Valiant universe. So Bloodshot tries to hide Kay in a mall, while like, thirty superheroes try to keep IE busy. It is connected to the Earth, but it's power mostly comes from psychological stuff, it creates fear and feeds on it, basically. The gang think they've won, only for all of them to get taken down by fears. There's a fun splash page, showing each of their fears, except possibly Gin-Gr. There's a lot, but I think it's fun enough to document here:

Arik is attacked by his dead wife, Armstrong is turned into a vomiting giant head creature, the Hard Corps are getting taken over by their implants, someone is being buried alive in a giant hourglass, a giant goat is stomping someone, Archer is being attacked by biblical monsters like a snake, Punk Mambo is being attacked by a voodoo doll of herself, Faith is being attacked by her dead parents, Ninjak is being attacked by his mom who's body is all stretched like a snake, etc. It's pretty cool.

Kay and Bloodshot bond over beef jerky, and struggle to understand each other, neither being able to properly enunciate what makes them who they are. Kay thinks Bloodshot is a robot, he denies it, but doesn't know how best to explain it, he gets frustrated and asks her to explain what a Geomancer is, which Kay is likewise unable to. She shows that her powers can remove the nanites from Bloodshot though.

The Enigma Box was locked by Gilad, though we don't know why he doesn't remember doing it. MI6 transfers it to a mobile base.

Bloodshot ends up fighting IE, who's fear based powers basically don't work on Bloodshot, since he has very few memories left to use against him. While IE is physically powerful in his own right, the lack of that edge gives Bloodshot a better chance than everyone else so far. He unloads a magazine into IEs head, and runs off with Kay. They do that like two more times, Kay fights IE, and dies. She cures Bloodshot of the nanites, and he takes off. This leads into one of the Bloodshot books I already reviewed.

The Enigma Box was sent to the past, from a future version of Gilad, it contains a kid, another geomancer. IE disappears, cause his job is done, but having the second geomancer keeps the dark age from happening.

* Kay goes on to be Bloodshot's love interest, gets killed, gets resurrected as Deathmate, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Valiant Universe.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2021
I'd never read a Valiant book before but this straightforward, well-paced, engaging story has made me keen to go back and read earlier stories about these characters. When you boil down what these characters are all about, this story has huge potential to come across as a goofy/cheesy pastiche of other superhero comics but the tone prevents that completely (as you'd expect from any book penned by Jeff Lemire) and the art is perfect for this story too. Highly recommended.

This is the first Valiant book I've picked up. I bought on the strength of the other reviews which stated this is a good place to start, and I've also been enjoying Jeff Lemire's writing on Descender.
This was a great gateway to the Valiant universe and even though a lot of characters are introduced you're not left in the dark.
The story is action packed and the characters are relatable. Some excellent horror style artwork sections too.
Highly enjoyable and I'm really glad I took a chance on it. Will be back for more!
