Top reviews from the United States

The first thing I do is to get a little more of the same thing as the other one in the only thing

I have read many Marvel titles in the 1978 time frame but reading this latest Marvel Masterwork was totally new to me. The opening issues (#267-271) are fair but starting in issue #272, Roy Thomas & John Buscema rejoin their talents to provide an entertaining story arc that runs from issues #273-278. Thor has had some great runs, especially the Jack Kirby one but John Buscema did one heck of a job taking over and it's great to have him back again. Roy Thomas attempted to really bring Norse mythology into the series and the Ragnorak arc is quite a build-up of events and storytelling. Action takes second place to plot but the plot is good. Without going into details of the storyline, I truly believe that if Marvel had wanted to end the Thor series, Roy & John could have done it easily based on the seriousness of this plot. Imagine a plot so serious that Odin loses an eye, Balder loses his life, Thor loses his hammer to a mortal through magic created by Loki, of course. The indignity of it all crashes on Thor when lady Sif is taken away by a new Thor. I like the way new characters were introduced into the story. We finally meet Odin's wife, Frigga. Hoder, the blind deserves a mention and last but not least, Loki's wife, Sigyn. If you have been following the Thor series and feel like I do about Loki, you go issue to issue just hoping he gets harshly punished. Issue #277 is the one we have been waiting for. A punishment so bad that Loki's screams of pain make Asgard shake! I was disappointed by the last issue in the book. After everything that happened, Thor has a spat with Father Odin and now Thor will have to remain on earth, banned forever from the realm eternal. I think we've seen this before a time or two. One last commentary is that the mortal that becomes Thor falls madly in love with goddess Sif. She is the embodiment of many men's dreams of a woman. Yet, from the introduction of her back in 1967 to 1978, no artist really had success in drawing her as a beautiful goddess. I wish Stan Lee, back in the day, would have asked Johnny Romita to create his version of Sif that everyone else could mimic. Some artists just have difficulty drawing women and is it any wonder that a few volumes back, Thor fell in love again with mortal Jane Foster. Sif could not compete against a mortal! As everyone knows, Asgardians know no fear. Somewhere along the way in other volumes, we had a crying Sif. Every issue it was tear time. To conclude this review, if you are a Thor fan, if you haven't bought this volume yet, do it! 1978 era was very lame for many Marvel titles but a lot of thought and creativity went into these issues.
