Eric Masterson was always a great character. He wasn't superman, or smart ass spiderman or a genius or a dark and moody avenger. He was just an honest good everyday man thrown into the deep end with a heart that couldn't stand by while someone gets hurt even if he is overwhelmed by the super powered beings or situations. This is a book I've been waiting for for a long time. I thought it would be about the actual series Thunderstrike, whcih it has the first issue of at the end, but actually it is mostly all about the pivotal moments that eventually lead to him becoming a hero in his own series. His merger with thor, then the issues that caused him to replace Thor as the Thunder God for a while, then it skips 2 events that I think where important to his story, over throwing Hiemdal and unknowingly installing a Odin body possessed by Loki and then returning in a later issue to over throw him and restore the real Odin. These were 2 important issues and I think this series is lessened by their not being part of the collection. Then it follows him freeing Thor from his inner prison and then the struggle over the hammer of Thor and finally his own enchanted weapon and identity Thunderstrike. Overall this is a good collection of stories, a must for any Eric Masterson, Thunderstrike or even Thor fan. An almost perfect telling of the important events of Eric Masterson Thunderstrike's life with only a few important bits missing. Even if you only like him a little you should get this book. And the new collection for his son Kevin Masterson who inherits his father mace in Thunderstrike :Youth in Revolt in a new mini series in 2011.

I was introduced to Thor when Eric Masterson was swinging the hammer. I saw this collection and my inner 12 year old jumped! Thunderstrike became a favorite as a kid. The writing is old school comic-book corn, but still very cool. This collection, however, has 2 huge jumps in time and offers two short paragraphs to explain the time lapse. This collection would have been much better as one or two huge compendiums of Thor/Thunderstrike stories leading up to the real Thor's return. Only for the most hardcore T-strike fan.

Most of this volume's content is now reprinted in the Thor Black Galaxy Saga Epic Collection, but the second half (Thor #457-459 and Thunderstrike #1) are still unique to this volume at this time. The collection sadly only collects issues detailing Eric Masterson's initial run as Thor and his becoming Thunderstrike when the original Thor returned and the first issue of Thunderstrike, which featured Eric introducing his new look and name. Sadly it remains the only issue of Thunderstrike reprinted, which is a shame given how Thunderstrike outsold Thor of this era and angered Marvel executives to the extent that they not only canceled Thunderstrike but ordered Eric killed off for the sin of outshining Thor. During it's initial release, the book was high in demand due to the fact that Tom DeFalco's Thor run had not yet been comprehensively collected but with the Epic Collections now doing so, this book's usefulness is sadly run out, especially since no further volumes reprinting Thunderstrike have come out.
