Twisted Romance Kindle & comiXology

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

Four stories of love and lust from comics’ coolest artists and writer ALEX de CAMPI! First, a demon prowls the 1978 New York disco scene in “OLD FLAMES,” drawn by KATIE SKELLY. Then, a curvy photographer’s assistant falls in love with someone way out of her league in “TWINKLE & THE STAR,” with art from ALEJANDRA GUTIÉRREZ. A spacefleet captain captures a most infuriating pirate in “INVINCIBLE HEART,” drawn by CARLA SPEED McNEIL. And a princess runs away with a dragon in “TREASURED,” featuring art by TRUNGLES. Plus steamy prose romance stories from awesome folks like MAGEN CUBED and VITA AYALA, and more comics shorts about love from MEREDITH McCLAREN, SARAH HORROCKS, MARGARET TRAUTH, and SARAH WINIFRED SEARLE. Collects TWISTED ROMANCE #1-4

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Twisted Romance is an unusual new anthology, one that promises interesting work from some of the best in contemporary comics, and a project that expands the idea what a romance comic can be in the mainstream market, both structurally and thematically.” —Comic Book Resources

"A comic book event should get people excited and invite newcomers to join in the fun. Ideally it tries something new and taps into the unexplored potential of the medium. Twisted Romance is that kind of an event, a weekly anthology series that breaks from the norm to achieve greatness." —The Onion's AV Club

“Twisted Romance is presenting some of the most interesting and talented creators working within comics today, and what they provide to this collection is representative of just why that is.” —ComicBook.com

“A nice balance to all the sugar you’ll get this Valentine’s.” —Uproxx

“Twisted Romance is a devastatingly sexy comic.” —io9

“Twisted Romance is in the best tradition of bold, experimental comic book creation.” —The Oregonian

This was quite an interesting anthology set - the common theme is a romance story with a twist, as suggested by the title, but the settings are all different. There's an incubus-succubus story line which comes about from a professional breakup agency, a romance between a girl and her AI, a space pirate running off on a fleet captain after a kiss, a chubby girl who is in a relationship with an ace actor; most of the stories have a queer angle. The compilation of the stories is also interesting - each of the four issues has one prose story sandwiched between two comic shorts.

The artwork for each of the comic shorts is from a different artist, so sometimes it is a beautiful style and sometimes it doesn't impress. There was one that made no sense at all, and another I had an issue with the lettering (try reading illegible font on a 7-inch tablet screen!); the prose were a good-length and had a magazine-like format with key quotes highlighted on every page. The style of the stories (prose or comic) all differs - and some of them can be explicit in terms of content while some are not. It was an interesting set, and for the most part, I liked the stories, irrespective of artwork style.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Image Comics, via Edelweiss.

Tielhard
3.0 out of 5 stars Not so twisted more fantastic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2020
So, a collection of romantic stories with a twist, usually fantastical. A few are really good stories, a couple have really good artwork, the two don't necessarily come together in the same package. I loved the story about demons in a night club, it was very Ellis-Bextor. The story about Twinkle finding love had perfect art work and the character was great but the story was so so. There is an interesting contemplation about what is in effect an enhanced Turing test or a hoax - who can tell? I marvelled at the art in the fairy story of domestic abuse but the story blew itself at the end, it was a big dissapointment. The rest ranged from meh to poor. For an anthology, four short comics worth praising in some way is not a bad haul.
