1. the growth of characters Sunspot and Cannonball from New Mutants, about one of the few times I was ever invested in the X-line of books. Roberto really shines here in a different role than just being muscle, and Cannonball's family is very neat.
2. Red Hulk. Having slowly liked Ross as Red, I was surprised he vanished from Marvel and got replaced with another general. However, I liked this guy. Same stiff, gruff persona, but a bit more play in him and backstory.
3. Toni Ho. Shame this book ended after 12 issues. I LOVE characters in power armor, and Toni is awesome.
4. American Kaiju. I love kaiju films. 'Nuff said!
5. Using nations and people, etc. only ever shown once in a Marvel comic way back in the early 60's showcases the writer's love of the universe, and it's nice to see these places get used and updated.
6. The art by Medina, Diaz and Barberi, and their inks (also with Juan Vlasco) and colors by Jeesus Aburtov and Andres Mossa rock. Everything in these issues is big, fun, destructive organized chaos.
I'd love to see these characters in another book sometime soon. If you love Avengers and old school comics, get this one.
There's some humor to be had with the team realizing they're not exactly the best heroes in the world but trying their best. And some friction as Sunspot has to get used to being part of a chain of command and not on his own.
But ultimately this book is doomed. It's a collection of minor characters trying to compete in a crowded marketplace. Its main premise of a government superhero team is quickly undone when the latest crossover event has Nazis take over the government.
Lasting only 12 issues the U.S. Avengers had potential and tried but ultimately could not win. If you like Al Ewing's New Avengers you'll like this but keep in mind it will be a short trip.
