Walt Kelly's Fables and Funnies Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Before achieving international fame as the creator of Pogo Possum, legendary cartoonist Walt Kelly produced an outstanding body of work adapting and illustrating fairy tales, fables and nursery rhymes for Dell Comics in the 1940s. Already an indisputable master of his craft, these wonderful and whimsical stories come to unparalleled life through Kelly's signature, spirited humor and fluid, exuberant hand.

Comprised of carefully selected and rarely seen work that originally appeared in issues of Dell Comics'
Fairy Tale Parade, Four Color, Raggedy Ann and Andy, and Santa Claus Funnies, this volume is a vital part of the history and legacy of one of comics' most eminent and influential masters.

With the publication of Dark Horses' "Fables and Funnies' there are now two current treasuries of Walt Kelly's early Dell Comics work, apart from "POGO." If you're a completest you will probably want both. If you are counting your pennies, this is definitely the one to buy. First, unlike Craig Yoe's reissues of classic comics, this volume is the SAME SIZE as the original publications. It's comic book size. It weighs about a third of what the Fairy Tale book weighs, is easy to hold while reading and dispenses with fussiness, such as the gold-edged pages of the former. It's never made sense to me to blow up comic art unless you are shooting from the originals. Sadly, all of Kelly's original drawings have long been lost or destroyed, necessitating scanning from the comics themselves and their inferior, mass-market printings. In the Yoe Fairy Tale volume the art looks muddy and off-register, but Dark Horse knows what they're doing. While we're still seeing the stories the way they looked when first printed, ( that can be a delight in itself!) the art has a cleaner feel, the paper is nicer, all leading to a more enjoyable reading experience. Walt Kelly was an amazingly prolific artist. There are multiple issues of his Animal Mother Goose series of which he did all the text and drawings, not to mention his contributions to Fairy Tale Parade and Raggedy Ann and Andy; so the work presented here is just the tip of the iceberg. Still, it's a well-rounded and well thought out selection of Kelly's best work in this genre. I have most of this stuff saved as digital downloads, but there's nothing like holding an actual book in one's hands! While I'm not old enough to have enjoyed the comics when they first came out, this fine treasury almost makes me feel as though I was! I would love a "Volume Two," please.

It didn't matter what Walt Kelly was drawing, whether Pogo (and friends) or other stories and different characters his ability to capture emotions in the faces and postures of the characters is wonderful. This volume gives Kelly's many fans a chance to see Kelly's work outside the swamp and work with characters other Pogo and his friends.

As a fan of Peter Wheat, I expected some sort of story line for this book, but it ends up being a children's book with great art but mostly nursery rhyme prose. I may go back and look at it to admire Kelly's art work, but not the written content. This is a great book to give to a child to get them started on reading and also appreciating Kelly's great art work.

It's Walt Kelly, it's going to be a five rating no matter what. Nice edition, though the printing looks like it's from the original newspaper instead of films.
