Wolverine vs. the X-Men is a great place to pick up the current Wolverine series. The collection starts off with a predictament: Wolverine, one of the most powerful and most difficult-to-kill mutants on earth, has been possessed by demons (see Wolverine Vol. 1: Wolverine Goes to Hell ) and the X-Men have to come up with a containment plan.
A demon-possessed Wolverine proves to be nearly unstoppable, even for the combined efforts of the X-Men. Cyclops is forced to come up with two protocols for killing Wolverine. I won't ruin the book be revealing too many details. However, with a little help from his friends (great cameos of Nightcrawler and Pheonix), Wolverine is pulled from the edge and is dead-set on getting revenge. But figuring out who is responsible may prove difficult (see Wolverine: Wolverine's Revenge ).
Jason Aaron at the helm of the stories has provided one of the most dramatic Wolverine arcs in a long time. I particularly appreciate the many nods to Wolverine's long and storied past in this issue. As someone who has followed X-Men for decades, I enjoy it when I can tell that the writers have also read some back issues.
Danial Acuna's art for Wolverine vs. the X-Men is superb. I like art that tends toward realism with good proportions.
Overall: Aaron's writing and Acuna's art make Wolverine vs. the X-Men a fantastic collection. Even if you haven't kept up with the current run of Wolverine (I hadn't read any Wolverine comics in a long time, and just bought this for X-Men), this collection will be a hit. Great battle scenes. Great flashbacks to Wolverine's past. Great X-Men teamwork. Great what-if scenario: How would you kill Wolverine? leads to a great graphic novel.
Issues 6-8: Wolverine is possessed by demons, so not only does he have a near-indestructible body, but he has additional powers like hellfire. Despite the serious danger of the situation, the arc still manages to be quite funny in places.
Issue 9 is the reason that the collection doesn't get 5 stars. A couple stupid things happen in it, it focuses on Mystique, and it's uneventful in the grand scheme of things.
There is also issue 5.1, which is plenty of fun. It's Wolverine's birthday, and it's the absolute perfect party for him. Of course, with Wolvie's luck, you know it can't all be good for him...
I really liked the art in the first 3 issues. It's not super-realistic, but the way it's colored really makes it "pop out".
After escaping Hell (The literal Hell), Wolverine is now possessed by a demon. Wolverine is held captive by a "psyche" group of demons in his mind. The demon possessed Wolverine is all set to go on a rampage, decimating Earth. One thing stands in his way though, the X-Men! And this time Cyclops is ready for a mindless Wolverine. There is some truly epic fight scenes as we see Wolverine fight Namor, Magneto, Colossus, and some of our favorite X-Men. Our favorite "sacred cow" even makes an appearance. The artist in this arc is different than the last, and while it isn't as good. It isn't bad either.
The final issue in this hardcover sets up the story for the next arc, which promises to be equally as good.
Wolverine v.s. The X-Men is what all comics strive to achieve. I recommend this collection for newcomers, heavily suggesting they get Wolverine Vol. 1: Wolverine Goes to Hell .

The action in this story is superb: Wolverine is still the best at what he does and this proven by him not only kicking all of the X-Men's butts, but by him taking down one of his most worthy adversaries - Magneto. However, Aaron, is not satisfied with having an epic battle, he goes further and shows a battled inside Wolverine's mind. Wolverine must fight the demons from the inside, and the reader gets to truly see how Wolverine ticks.
Some of the best moments occur inside Wolverine's mind: the X-Men realise (after being beaten viciously by Wolvie) that they must help Wolverine overcome the demons. And once inside Wolvie's mind they come across all of the different Wolverine's from the Marvel Universe (samurai, berserker, and Weapon X to name a few) - a truly awesome sight. There are also 'the doors' which offer a metaphor for Logan's mind make-up and they are hilarious with signs such as 'How I cheat at cards' to 'The Number of X-Men I have slept with'. But, with all the violence and humor there are some pathetic moments (I won't spoil anything, but I will say there are some guest star appearances which will surprise the reader).
Overall, this is a definite buy!
