Excellent read. Three exciting tales all centered around the effects of Apocalypse on the Xmen.

Collecting: All New X-Men #9-11
---- Extraordinary X-Men #8-12
---- Uncanny X-Men #6-10
Includes: variant cover art gallery

Apocalypse Wars brings the three ongoing X-titles together in order to explore the ongoing legacy of Apocalypse's influence and to test the teams against the greatest menace mutantkind has ever faced. Readers who want to get up to speed on the episodes that occur before this collection, will want to pick up:
All-New X-Men: Inevitable Vol. 1: Ghost of the Cyclops , Extraordinary X-Men Vol. 1: X-Haven , and  Uncanny X-Men: Superior Vol. 1: Survival of the Fittest . The backstory is helpful for some details, but not necessary.

***Some Plot Spoilers Below***

Overall this volume is well paced and well written. The Extraordinary X-Men chapters are the strongest. In these chapters Storm's X-Team of teachers and students (now "safely" relocated to Limbo in order to avoid the roving terragen mists), discover what they believe to be 600 new mutants. However, the X-Men uncover Sugar Man's plot to rule his own race of mutants as a god, and in the ensuing battle the X-students are transported into Sugar Man's ark. They find a world where Apocalypse rules and must fight for their lives against his horsemen: Colossus, Deadpool, Venom, and Moon Knight!

The Uncanny X-Men chapters worked a little less well for this reader. There is a relatively convoluted plot involving Archangel and Warren/Angel and an attempt by the Apocalypse's son, Genocide, to revive the horseman Death. The parallel plot in the Morlock tunnels was actually interesting. I am increasingly enjoying Sabretooth on the team, and the battle with Emplate will have serious ramifications for Monet.

Finally the All New X-Men chapters involve another time-traveling episode. In this time twister, Evan (the clone of Apocalypse) travels by mystical means back to ancient Egypt and meets young En Sabbat Nur (and it turn’s out that he’s really a swell guy!). These chapters offer something of an origin story for Apocalypse: it is a perhaps too-ready/easy and somewhat problematic explanation for why a good kid turns into a sociopath.

***End Potential Spoilers***

Unfortunately, completionists will need to collect two stand-alone volumes that are largely reprinted here. All New X-Men 7 & 8 are not printed here: ANXM readers will need
All-New X-Men: Inevitable Vol. 2: Apocalypse Wars  if they want to collect all the stories. Similarly Extraordinary X-Men 6 & 7 are not printed here: readers will need to pick up  Extraordinary X-Men Vol. 2: Apocalypse Wars (Extraordinary X-Men (2015-)) . The Uncanny X-Men stand-alone collection,  Uncanny X-Men: Superior Vol. 2: Apocalypse Wars , is fully collected here.

These editorial decisions contributed to the loss of one star. This crossover is not "BIG" enough that readers who do not already follow the X-series will gravitate towards it. Those loyal X-readers will almost certainly not want to have two missing episodes in each of two story arcs, and so will want to pick up the trade paperbacks. This book, then, can only be recommended for X-Fans who either only read "event" issues or who like me don't mind purchasing both the trades in order to have the complete series and the event hardcover.

The stories that meet in this volume continue in their respective X-titles. See:
Uncanny X-Men: Superior Vol. 3: Waking From the Dream , All-New X-Men: Inevitable Vol. 3: Hell Hath So Much Fury  and  Extraordinary X-Men Vol. 3: Kingdoms Fall

I am a huge fan of the character Apocalypse and I have read every X Men book he has ever been featured in. I was very excited to get this book ever since it was announced by Marvel. Unfortunately it just isn't as amazing as other Apocalypse stories such as ;Age of Apocalypse, Xmen vs Apocalypse: The Twelve, and Blood of Apocalypse. The first story was the most solid I liked the idea of Apocalypse controlling an entire world in the future, that's dependant on Apocalypse's immortality for survival. The X Men travel 1,000 years into the future to secure six hundred mutant embryos the sugar man created. Apocalypse reveals to storm His four horsemen act as "antibodies" to the xmen who are like "bacteria" in this new world called Omega World. Apocalypse destroys the embryos because he feels Mutantkind are unfit for his new world. Unfortunately this story felt like it had a lot of potential but it seemed too short and the ending was a little lackluster for me. The second story with Arch Angel I found to be the least interesting, and Apocalypse isn't even featured in the story at all. The third story focused on Evan Sabah Nur aka Kid Apocalypse. In this story Evan is celebrating his birthday and discovers a magical ancient Egyptian mask that teleports him and Beast back in time to ancient Egypt. Once there they encounter the sandstormers and the original young Apocalypse. This story was really interesting because it shows Apocalypse in a way we have never seen him before not even in his origins story "Rise Of Apocalypse" did we see Apocalypse this young or have this much of an in depth look into his character. Here the young Apocalypse is shown to be compassionate , forgiving, and friendly. He is shocked when he encounters Evan and thinks Evan is of the same race or species as he is not knowing Evan is really his clone. Evan wants to try and alter the future by bringing Apocalypse back with he and Beast, but Beast warns that it would be unwise to alter the timeline in such a way. Apocalypse helps save Beast from the sand stormers , but once they arrive back to their normal timeline, Evan feels angry that he couldn't save Apocalypse from his inevitable fate. All in all X Men Apocalypse Wars is comprised of three separate stories that show Apocalypse in a new and interesting way, but as a whole its just not as good as some other Apocalypse stories. The artwork is solid throughout and the writing is good. Unfortunately X Men Apocalypse Wars is nothing epic or ground breaking, but its a fun read and adds a little to Apocalypse's history as a character but overall it feels a little lackluster.
