Marc Guggenheim's X-men Gold arcs feel tired and a bit overripe, so its ending is not surprising. Guggenheim did really try to recapture some of the early Claremont magic, but he never developed antagonists enough to make them sympathetic and his overarching plots seem rushed or to fizzle. Kitty Pride's obnoxiousness as a leader is unfortunate and maintained, Rachel's "corruption" seems rushed as well, and the answers around Stormbringer and Storm's God powers feel a little weak. The focus on Storm seems a bit of an afterthought. Of the ever-rotating artists in this book, Michelle Bandini's pencils are quite good. Guggenheim's X-men arc has never really been truly terrible, but it also has never risen to its inspiration. Serviceable and often enjoyable, but not particularly strong.

Marvel advertised this issue heavily by pre-releasing a two-page spread of Iceman and Pyro "the morning after", bare abs and all. It was a one-night stand. And Marvel proclaimed that they were being supportive of gay community by finally having two major characters actually connect within a story. Ok, great... but it turns out those were the *only* two pages in the entire *story arc* (not just one issue). Those two characters never discuss, never interact again, have no ramifications, and are completely eclipsed by straight romances for the rest of the entire book. It's like Marvel said, "Ok, we showed they're gay, we never have to mention it again." The salacious content could have been removed entirely and change NOTHING about the rest of the book. When you can cut out two pages and the story ceases to have any LGBTQ+ content, you can't really claim to be groundbreaking.

X-Men Gold concludes its whirlwind tour of X-Men tropes and finishes out without a lot to say. Rachel finally faces Mesmero, Storm had a story, and the X-Men meet a brand new mutant. This was just okay overall.
