Did not know what to expect from this at first but I love this. Jean really takes charge and love to see her at the forefront finally. Leading an unorthodox team, with a surprise villain returning, this is definitely a good read.

The book came in great condition. The X-books felt devoid of compassion for quite a while until X-men: Red and the return of Jean Grey. Remember way back in Grant Morrison’s run when Xavier was considering making Jean the headmistress of the Xavier Institute. Well she’s back now, and partnering with nations to achieve a peaceful way forward for mutants. Mahmud Asrar’s art was the perfect compliment to this story. I highly recommend.

Tom Taylor takes over a new team of X-Men and does wonders with the lineup. With Jean Grey having recently returned from the grave (again), Taylor has set out to redeem the character and make her the leader and hero she should have always been instead of a perpetually dying punchline. Determined to help save mutant kind and foster the peace Professor X always dreamed of, Jean attempts to once again establish a safe haven for mutants (a la Genosha or Utopia), but this time away from human eyes to avoid making the new haven a target. Along with Laura Kinney, Gabby, Gabmit, Storm, Nightcrawler, Namor, and a few new additions, Jean assembles a team to protect mutants and foster peace. Unfortunately, Jean's new plans are immediately put to the test by the return of Cassandra Nova who is using Sentinel-based nanotech to literally infect humans and mutants alike with a disdain for mutant kind. Overall, Taylor's comics are a blast with fantastic artwork. His character beats are some of the best in modern comics (Gabby continues to be one of the best new characters of recent memory after Taylor's run on All New Wolverine). New team member Trinary is also a solid addition, though the second new member Gentle hasn't had enough time to shine just yet. The only issue that some may have with the book is its lack of subtly in conflating the X-Men's new challenges with modern day politics. Issues like fake news, the rise of hate groups in America, and online trolling are all tackled in the book with clear intentions. It is not that I disagree with Taylor's politics (far from it) but I can picture those on the opposite side taking issue with the story or even with some just feeling that the "weaponized hate" plot of the book is a bit too on the nose for political allegory. That said, the book is an absolute winner thanks in most part to Taylor's work on Jean. This is the leader the character should have always been, free from romantic triangle subplots and (for now) free from the Phoenix nonsense as well. Let's hope that this new status quo for Jean remains for awhile as it is a blast to see her fully step into the leadership role the X-Men need with Cyclops, Xavier, and Logan all gone at the moment.

Great story! It was interesting seeing the Return of Jean Grey. She’s not really my favorite character, but she is one of the main X-Men, and it was becoming weird to have so many of them missing. Although I personally really loved the younger time displaced X-men, and would have been fine with them replacing their older counterparts.

Jean Grey has never had such strong writing. This story is classic X-Men. Beyond that, Taylor creates a compelling story that speaks directly to the world we live in today without feeling ham-fisted overly wrought or obvious. The writing is smart and the art sets an excellent tone. It's a stellar line up for the book about new beginners.

The X-Men have always had a strong element of social commentary, and it’s been updated for the modern world. A very clever take on weaponized social media with some great art. Oh, and Storm, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler & Gambit are teamed up. What more do you want?

If you love the x men, this is fine. Nothing to write home about, but not disappointing in any way either. Epitome of three stars.

Tom Taylor uses the resurrected Jean Gray to reground an X-men team into something that feels like a classic X-men arc while mimicking or aping either Claremont era or Lee/Loebell era. It's not Grant Morrison's X-men or Bendis's or Whedon's, but it is both familiar and new in a way that readers haven't seen since Secret Wars. There are limits to the plot where there are political machinations to increase hatred towards mutants, but Cassandra Nova is a particularly devious enemy and grounding the book in something that involves neither time travel nor remarkably bland cosmic threats feel refreshing after X-men: Gold and X-men: Blue seem to have fallen in a rut. Perhaps, after the relaunch of Generation X got canceled, I have been more tolerant of Taylor's lack of new ideas. The only real new idea is Jean Gray playing a role generally reserved for either Xavier or Magneto. Furthermore, it is nice to see Namor used well in an X-team and the strike force team being mostly defensive. Despite the lack of new plot elements, there is some character development with Jean Gray dealing with her response to Black Bolt for Cyclops' death. Taylor could be developing something promising once he moves from more established X-men tropes.

Jean Grey is back and ready to get things done. She quickly assembles one of my favorite X-men teams ever. Who are ready to change the world with her. A good read and a great spot to jump back in for any lapsed fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story that does justice to Jean Grey

Really brilliant! One of the best comic TPBs I’ve read in ages and it really reminded me of the way the old 80s men handled what was going on in the world ... the negative comment about ‘isssues’ clearly isn’t by a lifelong fan. I personally loved that touch. Jean would not be Jean if she wasn’t trying to be empathetic and fix the world.

I have been reading X-men comics recently and although X-men is going through a relaunch, the Gold, Blue, Black and Red runs of X-men series are still fun to read.

X-Men Red is my favourite X-Men comic right now. I adore the way Tom Taylor writes Jean Grey and her teammates. I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say that the art is gorgeous. This is a book you do not want to miss out on. There is so much to love here. I cannot wait for the next volume.
