The book arrived on time and allows me to conclude a story arc that started a year ago.

(minor spoilers for Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender)

Being an enormous fan of Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force, I was incredibly curious to find out what happened to Age of Apocalypse Nightcrawler after his betrayal at the end of UXF. Instead of buying all of the tie-ins, I decided to wait until the trade paperback came out and read the story in full. I have to be honest when I say that my expectations (and preconceived notions) influenced my final opinion of the story. But, on that same note, I don't think I'm alone in what I expected going into this book, and hopefully my review will inform and enlighten anyone else thinking this will be about what's advertised on the cover.

If you're looking for Wolverine vs. AoA Nightcrawler, you are sorely out of luck. They barely share any panel-time together let alone duke it out. Instead this story is much more a finale for two short-running X-books - the multiverse hopping X-Treme X-Men, and the Uncanny X-Force spin-off series Age of Apocalypse.

In a nutshell, AoA Nightcrawler just wants to return to his universe and in doing so tears a hole in the fabric of reality, thus instigating a multiversal cataclysmic event that will end with the destruction of all universes.

As someone who hasn't read X-Treme X-Men or Age of Apocalypse, I wasn't as invested as I would be with the rosters of each book (although, I always wanted to read X-Treme X-Men because I love Civil War, black, steampunky Cyclops, teenage Nightcrawler, golden-clawed James Howlett and his brilliant romantic relationship with alt reality Hercules. Plus, how can you not love a disembodied Xavier head in a flying jar?).

Characters live, characters die, though nothing of incredible significance takes place, ultimately. I'm left with a few questions at the end that I don't expect will be answered anytime soon (or ever, frankly), and I was left rather disappointed. BUT, I credit that to expecting some kind of fight and/or focus on Wolverine and AoA Nightcrawler. Ya know, the two guys on the COVER of the book?

The art in this book, also, is schizophrenic. It's all over the map, artists change from page to page by the end, which had the annoying effect of taking me out of the story a bit. I like a consistent artist and there were NINE different pencilers on this book, ranging from brilliant to just plain ugly.

If you're looking for the showdown hinted at in Uncanny X-Force, you're out of luck. But, if you're looking for the conclusion of X-Treme X-Men, Age of Apocalypse, or just some fun, interesting characters, you may want to give it a look. It wasn't a bad story by any means, it just wasn't what I was hoping for, or expecting.

Marvel shoehorns two unrelated stories into one book for publishing purposes. I was only interested in the finale of the X-Treme X-Men series. I got the payoff in terms of story; Greg Pak does the most he can to wrap the story with short notice of cancellation. Unfortunately the last minute fill-in art is atrocious to the point that it makes the story difficult to read.

this story is B.S. it has nothing to do with the actual age of apocalypse. it continues and picks up off of nothing. not a necessary book.

I enjoyed this bookend the Age of Apocalypse books a great deal. They're in my opinion a very underrated series, along with x-treme x men. Good value and fun to read, some of the art is a little disappointing but some is fantastic. Was a good afternoon getting to sit down and finish this book.
